What Do HVAC Techs Do?

HVAC means heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It’s a good career if you enjoy mechanics, are patient and skilled in critical thinking.

As a tech, you’ll work on systems in homes and commercial locations.

Some of your responsibilities may include:

  • Installing, cleaning and maintaining equipment
  • Installing, repairing and replacing pieces
  • Examining and testing components and equipment

As an HVAC technician, you should be able to work in cramped areas and intense temperatures, since equipment is often found outside.

How Long Does it Take to Become an HVAC Technician?

First, you’ll need a high school diploma or GED.

Education to become an HVAC technician can be as quick as six months or as long as two years. Classes are available at technical/trade schools or community colleges.

Some companies might also ask for NATE certification, which helps further deepen your HVAC knowledge and competencies.

Prices can change dependent on which kind of classes you attend. You’ll also need to go over costs for books, materials and room and board, if you reside on campus.
