Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Laguna Niguel just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area frequently to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have built up through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Laguna Niguel will most likely swing up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Ocean Air Conditioning and Heating in Laguna Niguel, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re related to air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
